About K9 Nose Work®

Dogs love to sniff, so let’s let them!

Dogs love to sniff, so let’s let them! Inspired by professional detection dog training, K9 Nosework® is a fun search and scenting activity, suitable for virtually all dogs.

This is a dog focused activity, leaving traditional training behind. No prior experience in obedience or scent work activity is required. Dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes, abilities and physical capabilities are suitable for this activity. Shy, nervous, fearful, anxious and reactive dogs are most welcome, as each dog searches individually, without the social pressure of other dogs.

You will work alongside your dog, allowing them to use their instincts to play the detection game. In this dog and handler team, you are their sidekick, supporting them through the activity, learning more about their body language and communication, whilst strengthening your relationship and bond.

Sniffing has been proven to have a therapeutic affect, with the act of seeking increasing the feel good chemicals; dopamine and endorphins. Why not combine a fun activity that can increase happy feelings and reduce stress? Endorphins are natural stress fighters, promoting well being and relaxation.

The mental and behavioural benefits of this activity are incredible, we see improvements in confidence, motivation, problem solving skills, independence and alone training. Increased ability to handle change, different environments, reduced fearfulness, anxiety and reactivity. It also creates an opportunity for mental and physical enrichment, catering to all ages and abilities. Every dog is different, but every dog can benefit from nosework.

We start by building motivation and excitement to search for their favourite food or toy, progressing through to searching in different areas and contexts, both inside and outside. Once the dog’s drive for the scent game has been built to a successful level, we teach them to search for novel odours, like birch, anise and clove.

For those who like to compete, there is an option to take nosework to a competition level, participating in ORTs (Odour Recognition Test) and ACSW Trials.
